I understand your comments on trends for 2024, though some are obviously taken to the point of absurd on purpose. One troubled me. As marijuana becomes legal in more states you mention people turning to weed instead of alcohol. I think of alcohol as something to enjoy with or after a meal and something with a level of class to it. Maybe it’s just me since I’ve never even had a single puff of a regular cigarette! I see marijuana as something to get high from and alcohol as something more sophisticated. Maybe it’s just me as I’m sure I’m in the minority here. On $55 wine - something from Huet, Foreau, Boxler, Zind Humbrecht or JJ Prum. Probably in the minority there as well!

For our $55.99 we'd choose the Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo D'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore (2019 currently on sale at The Wine Destination for $53). Great article! Thanks Jason for your insightful content as always.

P.S. Also support Jeff Morris' Alsace pic in another comment. We have the Zind BTG!

I think the trends that you mentioned are not just in wine media, but are also reflected in the market place as well. Maybe not to the same degree, but the diversification and desire for more options is evident in all countries/markets & at different price points.

Light red wines is definitely a trend as Decanter, Falstaff and many other publications have written about it and wine media is partially driven by market demand. As to what I would drop 50--60 US$ on that's a tough choice. a) a German GG single vineyard Riesling b) Barolo hopefully a village designation, but probably not a MGA c) an old Tokaji Aszu 5 or 6 P, ideally from the 1998 0r 1999 vintage. Cheers & Merry Christmas!

I pick Pott's Pour Ma Gueule. Because of your writing, I now lean Loire or Alpine.
